Free Phone calls from your Galaxy tab on Wifi. How to use a tablet as a phone?

I have just tested out a technique to use your galaxy tablet as a phone whenever a Wifi or 3G is available. This technique allows you to get absolutely free incoming and outgoing phone calls. If you are using an android device over wifi and if you want to make free phone calls or receive free phone calls, then this is the best method I have seen so far. I haven’t found a single technique or tool to make or receive  free phone calls but there is a combination of tools which we can use to accomplish this. This method uses a combination of android voip apps and android IM apps to do this. I have personally tested this and it works great. Let us first go over the details for getting free incoming calls from any land line or mobile from anywhere in the world.

Ofcourse you can. But the thing is there is no out of the box method you can make phone calls from your USA issued galaxy tab. UK version has got the provision. But don’t worry, you can make free phone calls in the US and Canada, by just installing a few apps and following a few procedure. How To Make Free Phone Calls

Step 1. Download Skype android app

If you do not have skype for android installed, please install it. Don’t worry, you will not have to  buy skype credit. You can download and install the skype android app from the android app market or from the skype page for android. Create a skype account if you don’t have one already.

Step 2. Create an account with ring2skype

Ring2skype is a  FREE service which will connect your skype account to a phone number. Your skype user name will be assigned a new number by ring2skype. Your friends and family from around the world can use this number to call you from their land line or mobile and you can pick their call in your galaxy tab or any other android device. Here is what the interface will look like.

How to make phone calls using galaxy tab

As you can see in the picture above they will ask for you skype user id and password and the country where you reside. They will then give you a local number for that state. Usually, you will get a number followed by an extension. Currently the service is available in 37 countries.

Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Peru, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela.

Step 2. Enjoy free incoming calls to your Galaxy tab

Now you can share the ring2skype number with your friends. All they need to do is dial the number and the extension and you will get the call in your android powered device like a galaxy tab. The sound quality is ok for a free service.

Free outgoing calls from your android device like Galaxy tab

The only free method for making outgoing phone calls works so far is for USA only. I haven’t figured out a way to do this for other parts of the world. Others can use method 2 and 3 which ever suits them best but they are not free.

Method 1 Use NetTALK android app

Using NetTALK android app, you can make unlimited outgoing phone calls to any landline or mobile in the United states.  You need to install the netTALK android app for galaxy tab from the app market. It is a free app. The next thing you need to do is create an account. You need to verify the email id you provided during registration. After that, you are all set and you can make outgoing phone calls anywhere in the USA and Canada from your galaxy tablet for absolutely FREE. How cool is that. But before considering installing the free NetTalk app, go through the following article on Things to consider before using galaxy tab as a phone

Method 2 Using Fringout Credit.

This method is not free but I prefer this because of the ease of use. I have installed fring android app and have taken a $10 fring out credit. This allows me to make outgoing phone calls any where in the US from my galaxy tab or other android phones. The amount will not expire for 12 months from the start of service. So, you can still use it to give missed calls without paying a penny. In the near future, there is a chance that Fring might come up with a credit reselling plan which will allow you to sell your credit to some one else.

Method 3 Using Skype credit.

Alternatively, you can use skype credits. I have noticed that the calling rates for skype is higher than that of fringout credit. This is the main reason why I use fringout credit to make my phone calls.

Note: I am currently working on using a single number to do incoming and outgoing calls. Stay tuned for that post.

It worked. I am glad I can make phone calls from my galaxy tablet. I usually use it with wifi connection and do not have a data service. The solution you have given worked perfectly for me. I am also looking at sipgate. Have you used it?

The service is worthless to me.

  8. So i did it, but they don’t have idaho area code numbers so she has to call long distance each time?

  9. So I used a phone card and tried but it just rang and sever answered. Does this not work for Acer A501 tablet?

  10. Have you gone through how to do incoming and outgoing calls with the same number yet?

  11. does it works in verizon galaxy tab???

  12. Can I use it in Canada?

  13. Hey, am I missing something here? I cannot download nettalk to my galaxy tab. I set up an acct and went to the smartphone app. download page. When I tried to download the android app. Basically, I cannot! What gives? Can anyone help?

  14. To clarify…when I hit the button to download the android smartphone app. it comes back w/no results found. What have you done to download it to the galaxy??

From your galaxy device, go to android market place and search for the app name “nettalk” and download and install the free app.

Hi Kay, Once you go to the android marketplace and install the app called nettalk, you create an account id and password. Once you do that, come back to your galaxy device and use that id and password to login. After you login you will be able to make calls.

  15. Thanks for your response. Has this not happened to anyone before? If I go to the marketplace via the galaxy and search nettalk I only get 3 selections, nono of which are nettalk. If I go to the nettalk ws and go to their download page, try to download, I get a message that it may be compatible w/some of my devices. The device selection includes my samsung fascinate (galaxy) phone and the other I don’t recognize.

At one point I tried to open a new account w/nettalk, but still no luck. Any ideas? My galaxy came from BestBuy and not through a wireless carrier.

Kay, which android version is your galaxy running on? Mine was Android 2.2 the 7 inch version. And I can tell you that it worked in mine. May be if you are using Android 2.3 or 3.0, it is possible that the nettalk app will no be compatible with your device. I lean towards this conclusion because when you access android market from a device, only the compatiable apps will show up in the search results.

  16. OK, OK…So the only way to call from the galaxy tablet is to connect to a smartphone?? Is that the deal? Because in the video demo he had the galaxy connected to a phone the entire time.

If that’s the case, and with all due respect….why bother??? Just use the phone!! Or am I still missing something? Because my Galaxy WILL NOT download nettalk. It will only download to my droid phone, which is a samsung fascinate.

Kay, You are mistaken. I was just charging both the devices. They were not connected with each other :D. And I have demod Nettalk in my galaxy tab. So it sure will work with galaxy tab.

      • When I watched the video, it looked like the galaxy was connected to the phone. I went to youtube and watched another video (don’t know if it was you or not) and saw a demo without a phone, making calls from a 7″ galaxy tablet.

Guess that’s my problem. I have the 10.1″ version running droid 3.1.
